Protect Yourself from Fraudulent “Spoofing” Calls

Don’t Fall for the Call: How to Spot and Stop Phone Scams

Your phone rings. The number looks familiar. The caller sounds professional. They say they’re from Alta Vista Credit Union and there’s fraud on your debit card.

Then they ask for your full card number.

That’s the trap.

We’ve recently been made aware of fraudulent “spoofing” calls targeting members. In these scams, criminals manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from Alta Vista Credit Union. In one reported case, members received calls from 909-809-3838, with the caller identifying herself as “Samantha,” claiming there was fraud on their debit card and asking them to read their full card number aloud.

Let’s be clear:

Alta Vista Credit Union will NEVER call you and ask for your full debit card number, PIN, or online banking credentials.

How These Scams Work

Fraudsters use technology to disguise their phone number so it looks legitimate. They create urgency, often mentioning “fraud” or “suspicious activity,” to pressure you into sharing sensitive information quickly.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Requests for your full debit or credit card number
